WU Ziwei
PhD in
Computational Media and Arts
2021-2022

I am WU Ziwei, a current PhD student in Computational Media and Arts (CMA) Thrust Area at HKUST(GZ). I am a media artist and endeavor to become a researcher. After graduating from the School of Intermedia Arts, China Academy of Art, I received my master’s degree in Computational Arts at Goldsmiths, University of London. After that, I had the honor to join the Pilot Scheme of HKUST(GZ).

My undergraduate study equipped me with an understanding of general aesthetic concepts, fundamental research capabilities, and creative skills, while my postgraduate experience taught me the function of creative coding and its flexibility, potential, and international applicability in artistic creation. However, it was not until studying at HKUST(GZ) that I learned what academic research was. Prof. QU Huamin, Thrust Head of CMA, is a good role model and he has taught me how to read theses efficiently and conduct a lot of reading analyses with a critical eye. My first year studying at HKUST(GZ) has been impressive. I have been touched by the University’s diligent, honest, and inclusive attitude towards academia, which is reflected in its high level of academic freedom. HKUST(GZ) enables an open scholarly atmosphere for genuine idea exchange between teachers and students, who make their best effort to contribute to each other’s research. Such an environment is undoubtedly a favorable soil to support young students' growth in the early stage of their study. In particular, the encouragement from teachers has given us confidence and courage to expand the border of the interdisciplinary field of arts and technology; we are motivated to conduct more research and make practical applications. While it can get tiring to study under this strenuous environment, I feel blessed to have the chance to grow with fellow teachers and students and cope with more challenges ahead.
